Back in 2006 I lined up for an embarrassing amount of time outside the Sony flagship store in midtown Manhattan to get a Playstation 3 for $599 US dollars. It was freezing, raining, and I almost got stabbed, but my PSN ID is just “Shane”.
Black Friday is a different beast. The savings offered by doorbuster deals — the ones people literally line up for weeks for — couldn’t possibly make up for the time and discomfort involved. And in any case, those people could be getting the same deals online.
It’s common sense that digital retailers like Amazon would price match their brick and mortar competitors (why wouldn’t they?). If anything, the best of the physical store doorbusters are limited inventory traps to lure unwitting customers into lines. You’re more likely to get your hands on that limited inventory by reloading a page than by trying to be the first to set up camp outside your local superstore.
